The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday restrained O Raja, brother of Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam from functioning as Chairman of Theni District Milk Producers Cooperative Society.
With this, interim committee on administration was formed and O Raja was made Chairman. The interim committee was formed with vested interests since vice chairman and members of the committee were from the AIADMK, the ruling party. Hence, transparency should be ensured in electing members of the committee and election should be conducted in a fair manner, the petitioner prayed.
Citing these, the petitioner sought intervention of the bench to restrain the interim committee from functioning.
Meanwhile, the government counsel intervened and argued that those 17 members were temporarily designated and permanent members would be elected appropriately. Therefore, the counsel sought the bench to dismiss the petition. However, the bench restrained Chairman Raja and sixteen others made as members of the society in Theni from functioning until further orders. The respondents were ordered to file counter affidavit and the case was adjourned to October 17.
