The Namma Chennai mobile application, launched under Smart City Mission to lodge civic complaints, has been promoted by the Corporation as a panacea to redress civic grievances. But it turned out to be quite distressing for a resident as instead of getting his grievance redressed, he attracted threatening phone calls reportedly from a civic employee for using the App.
“I sent the complaint on August 18 and I received a call from a person the following day. As I am a resident of Nerkundram and lodged a complaint pertaining to Chinmaya Nagar, the man on the phone argued saying that I should not raise a complaint of other localities,” Pradeep said. He further noted that the man who claimed to be involved in garbage removal in Kodambakkam zone, pestered him to disclose his address and wanted to meet him in person, while using derogatory words and warning him of dire consequences if he continued to raise such complaints.
Wondering as to how that person obtained his number, Pradeep said every attempt to call that number only resulted in a woman, claiming to be a Corporation Staff, picking up the call. She claimed that the man who spoke is on leave. However, she told Pradeep that the man never threatened anyone.” A Chennai Corporation higher official said that employees have been directed not to share contact details of residents raising complaints to anyone. “It is unacceptable, and we will definitely take action,” he assured. However, efforts to elicit a response from the Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash on the issue went in vain.
