The police have nabbed a 40-year-old man who stole Rs 16 lakh from City Union Bank (CUB) employees waiting to load cash at an ATM kiosk, from Perambalur. He was brought to Tiruchy on Saturday and the police have recovered Rs 15.70 lakh from him.
On Friday night, a youth in inebriated state was found roaming with a bag. He hired an autorickshaw at Madhana Gopalapuram and asked the driver Murugaiah to drop him at a hotel. As he was drunk, no one offered him room after which he slept in the auto.
After trying to wake him several times in van, the auto driver opened the bag to get some information about him from it. However, he was shocked to see wads of cash inside.
Soon, Murugaiah informed the police on patrol and they conducted an inquiry. The identified him as Stephen (40), a resident of Pallakkarai in Tiruchy.
Stephen reportedly confessed the police that he had lifted the cash bag from the bank employees. Subsequently, the police recovered a sum of Rs 15.70 lakh and arrested him.
