Sandalwood smugglers have struck again in Coimbatore. This time, the smugglers have axed and smuggled a well grown sandalwood tree from the house of a retired personal assistant to Collector.
Around midnight, Gandhi sensed some unusual noise and switched on the lights to check out.
He then found a large group of men axing the sandalwood tree. Immediately the smugglers fled by taking away the main trunk of the sandalwood tree leaving behind its branches.
On receiving information, the Kuniamuthur police rushed to the spot and held investigations. Gandhi had been living in the rented accommodation owned by one Vaidyanathan in Chennai.
Following repeated incidents of sandalwood smuggling, the people have urged the police to provide protection to sandalwood trees grown in residential neighbourhoods.
The smugglers have struck not less than six times in Coimbatore over the last two months. In the last five incidents or so, the smugglers were targeting only trees grown in core city areas such as Sai Baba Colony, Race Course and RS Puram. But now they have moved over to Kovai Pudur for the first time, said a cop.
The police have registered a case and further inquiries are on to nab the culprits.
