The kudimaramathu works were being expedited in the delta region as only a few days were left for the deadline, that is the end of this month, to complete the entire process. Meanwhile, Collectors of various districts on Thursday conducted inspections and instructed the officials to speed up the works.
In order to desilt waterbodies in the delta region under the kudimaramathu special scheme, a fund of Rs 60.95 crore was sanctioned and Tiruchy district was allocated Rs 4.52 crore. The Public Works Department officials have also been instructed by the Collector to complete the works within the scheduled period.
Meanwhile, Thanjavur Collector A Annadurai after inspecting the ongoing works said, the drive was initiated at a cost of Rs 24 crore and officials have been instructed to finish it by August 26.
Under the special desilting scheme, a fund of Rs 24 crore has been sanctioned to the district in which as many as 114 works have been carried out. The sand deposits on the middle of the Vennaru have been removed, the collector added.
In Nagapattinam, Collector S Suresh Kumar, who inspected the ongoing works said that officials were instructed to complete the works by the end of this month to ensure that there was no hitch in water reaching the tail end regions. He said that the Valappar has been desilted at a cost of Rs 1 crore and urged the workers to complete the works within the schedule.
Tiruvarur Collector T Anand also inspected the progress of the works in the district.
