In yet another case of a brave act by senior citizens, a sexagenarian man and his 50-year-old wife foiled a theft attempt in their house at Orathanadu in Thanjavur district during the early hours on Tuesday and also caught the burglar, who was later handed over to the police.
When Palaniappan went inside the house and checked, he spotted an unidentified person moving around. The intruder, shocked by the entry of Palaniappan, attempted to push him and escape from the spot.
Indira, who was standing near her husband, landed an ‘unexpected’ punch, which threw the burglar on to the floor.
Palaniappan and Kumaresan then acted swiftly and caught the intruder, preventing his escape from the house.
All the three then raised an alarm, and on hearing their screams, neighbours rushed to the spot, caught the burglar and recovered some weapons from him. Later, the intruder was handed over to the police.
During inquiry by the Orathanadu Sub Inspector of Police Vijay Krishna, the suspect identified himself as Rajendran (57) and said that he was part of a four-member gang. While he was caught, his associates managed to escape from the locality. Meanwhile, the police appreciated the brave act of the elderly couple.
