An all-party delegation met the Thanjavur Collector on Tuesday and urged him not to release more water into Kollidam river as it would only drain into the sea.
Members from various political parties, led by MP SS Palanimanickam, Rajya Sabha MP M Shanmugam, MLAs Durai Chandrasekar, Kovi Chezhiyan and TKG Neelamegam met Collector A Annadurai on Tuesday and appealed to him to ensure that the entire flow was diverted into the Cauvery so that it could be benefit the irrigation of thousands of hectares of farmlands in the region.
Later, speaking to the reporters, Palanimanickam said that the delegation has asked the officials to make arrangements to release water through Vennaru, Vettaru and Kallanai canal as it would reach tail-end areas quickly.
“We have also asked the Collector to expedite the desilting works in the entire delta region. Similarly, the Kudimaramathu work has not been started in several places and in a few pockets, only 50 per cent of the work has been completed. So, we asked them utilise the fund fully for speedy completion of the work,” Palanimanickam said.
The MP also added that the political party leaders and the farmers’ associations would support the State government if it initiated measures to ensure that the water released for irrigation reached all parts.

As the Chief Minister has released water from Mettur, the PWD has initiated several precautionary measures. The flow in the Cauvery would be closely monitored by the officials, Manivasan said. “The department is equipped to handle any situation,” he added.
He also said that the PWD officials in delta region were asked to ensure that the desilting works are completed at the earliest.
