Former mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation Uma Maheswari (60), her husband and their house help were found murdered in their home in Reddiarpatti, Palayamkottai taluk, on Tuesday.
According to the police, the incident came to light when Uma’s relative Karthika dropped by the house on Tuesday evening to find her, her husband Muruga Sankaran (67) and their house help Mari lying dead in a pool of blood. She immediately called the police and a team led by Commissioner of Tirunelveli City N Bahaskaran arrived at the spot. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the murders were possibly the work of a gang of robbers that attacked the couple in their house around 3 pm and when the Mari tried to help, she too was killed. The police found that jewellery, including a gold chain and bangles worn by Uma, and other valuables were missing from the cupboards.
The Commissioner of Police said three special teams have been formed to nab the culprits.
DMK president MK Stalin has condemned the murder of the party’s former Mayor Uma Maheswari of Tirunelveli on Tuesday.
Stalin, in a statement issued late on Tuesday, said that it was condemnable that DMK functionaries were being murdered in the AIADMK regime, which is incapable of maintaining law and order. He also urged the state to immediately arrest the murderers of Tirunelveli’s first woman mayor who had received accoladed from the late DMK president M Karunanidhi.
