A 19-year-old girl Rajalakshmi received applauds from people all over Tamil Nadu for her effort to single-handedly plant paddy in a 1-acre land. She is the daughter of Karupaiah, in Akkarai Vattam village near Karambakkudi in Pudukkottai district. She has completed her B.Sc in Government Women’s College, Thanjavur District. From her early age, she was interested in farming and occasionally engaged in agricultural activities to help her parents.
In an agricultural field owned by her family, her parents planted the paddy seedlings through bore irrigation. There was a delay in getting workers to plant the paddy crop. So, Rajalakshmi decided to undertake the planting process single-handedly. Her parents agreed to this. She then planted paddy in 1 acre of land in the last 3 days. When the neighbouring agricultural workers in her village offered to help her, she humbly avoided it. This effort of hers was greatly appreciated by the farmers, the public and the youth in that area.
At a time where agriculture and the plight of farmers are given much preference and spoken about widely, the attempt of the college student has instilled awareness on agriculture. She has also been praised extensively on social media for the effort.
