A 38-year-old lorry driver died, and another driver was critically injured after two lorries collided head-on and fell from a railway over bridge in Coimbatore early on Tuesday.
The second lorry was coming from Kerala and was driven by Jayaz (38), a native of Kerala.
The accident happened when both the lorries, driven at a high speed, collided against each other on the Irugur railway over bridge.
In the impact, both the lorries plunged to the ground from a height of around 80 feet. Police said Jayaz died on the spot, while Ragavendra, who jumped from the lorry, suffered critical injuries.
The injured man was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) by an ambulance. The body of the deceased has been sent to the CMCH for a post-mortem. Both the lorries were damaged beyond repair due to steep fall from the bridge.
Traffic was disrupted on the busy stretch for more than an hour due to the mishap. Police faced a tough time in regulating public, who gathered in large numbers on the bridge to take a look at the lorries.
