The Kattalai Mettu Canal’s water is used to irritate around 20,000 acres of agricultural lands in Tiruchy. On Saturday, the farmers of the region were in for a shock to find the water in the canal polluted with effluents and other wastes draining into it. Following this, they urged the District Collector to take immediate action to avoid crop damage.
After a series of protests by the farmers, water was released to the canal from Mayanur in Karur. This water from the Kattalai Mettu Canal was sufficient to irrigate lands in Kulithalai and Mayiladi in Karur District and Adavathur, Allithurai, Dhayanur and the adjacent areas in Tiruchy.
“Since the last one week, the canal was layered with wastes and effluents from the dying units in Karur. Many residents in the area, who used the water experienced skin irritation and even the crops began to die,” said Puliyur A Nagarajan, TMC State President (Farmers Wing).
The farmers highlighted the issue at the Collectorate in Karur district. Subsequently, Collector T Anbalagan on Friday ordered the Pollution Control Board to inspect the spot and take action.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the farmers submitted a petition to Tiruchy District Collector K Rajamani, who also ordered the PWD and Agriculture Department to inspect the spot.
