Vidyasagar Rao visited Jayalalithaa at Apollo hospitals on October 1, 2016. Five days later, he wrote to the President stating Jayalalithaa remained sedated while at the hospital. He reportedly said that he had discussed Jayalalithaa’s condition with doctors from Apollo hospitals and members of the AIADMK.
This account is different from the retelling of the incident as found in his book detailing his time as Governor of Tamil Nadu. In the book, Vidyasagar Rao had stated that while he was only able to see Jayalalithaa from behind a glass panel, she had acknowledged his presence and looked in his direction. This was corroborated by his secretary Ramesh Chand Meena during his deposition. Considering the letters to the President, it remains to be seen what transpired during the visit of the Governor to the hospital.
The letters have come to light following the request by the Justice A Arumughaswamy enquiry commission probing the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Jayalalithaa spent 75 days at the hospital following her admission on September 22, 2016 after taking ill at her residence in Poes Garden. She passed away on December 5, 2016.
