Vijay, a 27-year-old constable attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP), succumbed to swine flu at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital (SRMC) in Porur on Wednesday, taking the total death toll due to fever in the state to 30.
Vijay, son of Murugesan, got married only in May this year. He was assigned to Tirunelveli for the Tamirabarani Maha Pushkaram festival last week. On his return, he had fallen ill and was on sick leave since Friday.
Speaking to DT Next, Dr J Radhakrishnan, Health Secretary of the State, said, “We are yet to get a clear break up on the number of fever cases. However, the state has seen totally 30 deaths due to dengue and swine flu cases. The swine flu deaths are however slightly more than dengue fatalities. While fever cases are coming to Government Hospitals for treatment, they fail to let go of their habits, including poor hygiene, lack of hand washing and the like.”
Stressing on the need for the public to focus on such factors, he said, “We continue to urge the public to follow these steps – which are mandatory to prevent fever and other illnesses.”
