Even as next year’s Lok Sabha elections inch closer, ticket aspirants across major parties in the State have begun to reach out to voters in their probable constituencies.
The Twitter post of former union minister Dayanidhi Maran of the DMK was a case in point. Following the launch of ‘Train 18’, which was manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) here, Maran, in his congratulatory message, called the train a produce of Central Chennai which would soon run in New Delhi.
That the former Central Chennai MP cared to identify the train with his erstwhile constituency instead of the factory has drawn the attention of a few DMK insiders about his intentions.
Elsewhere, in the ruling AIADMK camp, sitting Tirupur MP V Sathyabama, one of the most active Twitteratis in the party, has been tweeting regularly about her constituency.
Sathyabama, who had managed to secure the appointment of Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman even when her party convenor O Panneerselvam was denied audience, has already started visiting free health camps in remote locations in her constituency and posting updates on the same on her twitter page.
Even a seasoned parliamentarian TR Baalu (DMK), who was recently appointed principal headquarters secretary of the party, has started making public appearances, especially in party rallies in Chennai region, more often than what he did in the recent past.
DMK women’s wing secretary Kanimozhi, whose Rajya Sabha tenure ends in July next year, has already started working on field in Thoothukudi, which sources say is the preferred choice for her maiden battle of ballots. From conducting survey to setting up teams and meeting industry captains from the coastal town, Kanimozhi has been quite explicit in revealing her intentions for the ensuing LS election.
If sources are to be believed, sitting MPs and probable candidates in both major Dravidian parties have started contacting party functionaries in the seats of their choice to prepare for the polls. A few erstwhile MPs and union ministers in the DMK have reportedly given their wish list to the party high command.
