Police said Murugesan from Thanjavur has been running a finance company for which the headquarters is in Parry’s Corner, Chennai, with branches across the state. On Friday, Mathiyalagan (59) and Sundaresan (55), employees of the finance firm started for Tiruchy in an omni bus with Rs 1 crore cash which was to be distributed among the branches.
On Saturday at 5.20 am, the duo got down in Tiruchy, took a two-wheeler and were on their way to Palakkarai branch. When they reached Tiruchy head post office, a gang of four, which had been following them in a car waylaid them, assaulted them and snatched the bag containing the money. The duo gave chase but in vain.
A complaint was lodged with the Cantonment police and a case registered. Deputy Commissioner A Myilvaganan visited the spot and held investigations. Cops also inspected the CCTV camera on the post office area and recovered footage of the incident, but the car used by the gang couldn’t be made out. Other CCTV footage yielded more clues as the cops realised that the car had followed the omni bus from Chennai itself. A special team has been formed to trace the gang.
On November 5, 2017 near Junction railway station, Tiruchy, a gang had followed the omni bus in which a private finance company employee Saminathan (43) was travelling with Rs 1 crore. When the employee was having a cup of tea at 5 am, the trio snatched the bag and fled. However, they were arrested and Rs 76 lakh recovered.
