Taking suo motu cognisance of a woman temporary employee in the disaster management department at Tirunelveli Collectorate being sexually harassed by a tahsildar, TNSHRC member D Jayachandran directed the Tirunelveli District Collector to explain why the ICC was not created and the inaction in dealing with the sexual harassment complaint filed by the single mother. Directing the official to file the report in four weeks, the commission warned of stringent action in case of default.
The TNSHRC took cognisance of the issue based on a newspaper report which claimed that the 25-year-old single mother was reportedly subjected to sexual harassment by the said tahsildar. But her complaint in this regard to District Revenue Officer P Muthuramalingam and Collector Shilpa Prabakar Satish failed to evoke any action. The report noted that the Tirunelveli District Administration, in defiance of the Sexual Harassment at the Work Place (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, had not constituted the ICC.
