According to the forest department, sixty-year-old Balakrishnan from Pudhukaadu area was plucking tea leaves in a nearby estate, when a bear emerged from the bush and attacked him.
The other labourers, who were shocked on sighting the bear, came to his rescue and chased it away. Balakrishnan was immediately rushed to Valparai Government Hospital for treatment.
A team of forest department staff have been posted in the area to monitor and prevent the bear from straying out of the forest cover. After elephant and leopards, now bear menace has been growing in both Valparai and The Nilgiris.
Only a week ago, an adult bear accompanied by its two cubs broke into a bakery in Gudalur and devoured away snacks stocked up for sale.
