The decision was made at the high-level party meeting, attended by important functionaries and district secretaries, held here. Later while addressing the media, Premalatha said, “The decision to make me the party treasurer was surprising. Even though I was with him (Vijayakanth) in the morning, I was not informed about it.”
Besides Premalatha’s, several other appointments were made in the meeting presided over by Vijayakanth. While V Ilangovan was appointed as the party’s presidium chairman, Azhagapuram R Mohanraj was appointed the propaganda secretary.
The resolutions for the appointments were passed unanimously in the meeting.
“It took 14 years for me to become the treasurer. Captain (Vijayakanth) values only hard work and if you do hard work you will definitely be given a party post,” said Premalatha, adding that her husband values hard work above everything else.
The move to appoint a family member to a key post comes as a surprise as Vijayakanth had once vociferously criticised the DMK as a party run by a family.
Premalatha, however, defended the party by stating, “Captain has never spoken against family politics. Whoever works hard will definitely have a place in the party. It is up to the cadre to accept the party leaders.”
