With the drought affecting all districts in Tamil Nadu and the water table shrinking, smaller bottling firms are facing the heat of dwindling business.
Chennai: The bigger brands of bottled water source their water needs from Poonamalee and Gumidipoondi. “Though we have been maintaining normal production, the future is bleak as we are already facing a water shortage,” said D Saravanan of Poornima Aqua in Perambur, adding, “Though our plant is near Sholavaram, we fear that water availability will be affected during summer. So, we plan to supply to only regular customers as our daily production is less than 20,000 litres.” Competition and water issues has led to many closing their units. David of Grace Global Sources in Perungalathur said, “We have stopped packaging water,” while Prabhu of PSG Aqua of Perumalpattu in Tiruvallur district said, “I have given up the unit to my brother as sourcing water is always problematic.” Though plants have government approval, lack of demand and drought have resulted in them drawing less than the allowed limit.
