Tamil Thalaivas ended without a victory in its VIVO Pro Kabaddi home leg as it went down 25-29 to U Mumba at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Friday.
MS Athul (7 points) had a fine outing against his former employer, notching up the maximum points by a single player. All-rounder Sandeep Narwal contributed five invaluable points as U Mumba got back to winning ways in PKL 7.
The host made a good start, with Mohit Chhillar tackling Abhishek Singh in the first minute. Rahul Chaudhari took out cover defender Surender Singh before pulling off a two-point raid in his next. The match was then on an even keel as the scores were locked at five each.
Mohit and raiders V Ajith Kumar and Rahul helped Tamil have a six-point cushion at 12-6. But the tourist got four successive points to reduce the deficit to just two (10-12) at half-time. After the restart, Athul sent Rahul and Ran Singh to the bench in a single raid, giving U Mumba the lead for the first time in the duel.
Athul continued his good work as the away side inflicted the first all-out in the 25th minute. At that moment, the scoreline read 19-15 in favour of the Fazel Atrachali-led U Mumba.
An error from Abhishek did give Thalaivas a glimmer of a hope of making a comeback, but the visiting defence put in crunching tackles in the end to take its side home.
The PKL 7 caravan now moves to New Delhi, with host Dabang Delhi taking on Bengaluru Bulls in the opener on Saturday. Jaipur Pink Panthers will square off against Telugu Titans in the second contest of the day.
