Sri Lanka will now face India in the final to be held on Sunday at the same venue. India made it to the final beating Bangladesh Under 19 by two runs in the first semi-final.
After being put into bat first, Sri Lanka was in all sorts of trouble at 0 for 2, which soon became 16 for 3, with Afghanistan’s new-ball bowlers Abdul Rahman and Azmatullah Omarzai claiming three wickets between them.
However, Sri Lanka found its saviour in Nuwanidu Fernando who made 111 off 129 balls to anchor the innings.
Fernando forged 47-run stand for the fifth wicket with Kalana Perera (22) and then added 67 for the sixth wicket with skipper Nipun Dananjaya (27). Pasindu Sooriyabandara’s unbeaten 19 then helped Sri Lanka to 209 for 7 in 50 overs with Fernando out off the last ball of the innings. Rahman eventually finished with 3 for 42 in his nine overs.
In defence of the total, Afghanistan looked on course for a win with skipper Rahmanullah Gurbaz contributing 46 while one down batsman Basheer Khan made 27.
