For the first time in five years, most of the lakes in Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram districts have reached their maximum capacity. Heavy rainfall in the catchment areas brought by cyclonic disturbances and easterlies, especially in the last few days, resulted in the water levels increasing rapidly.

Chennai: Officials from the Public Works Department are positive that there would be enough water for agricultural activities this summer and there will not be any water shortage.
Among the 909 lakes, only 83 have clocked in 75 per cent water. Five lakes store 50 percent, while the other 821 reservoirs are brimming. But, the partially filled lakes are expected to get filled up with a few more days of rainfall.
