The party high command has divided Chennai north party district into Chennai north and Chennai northeast party districts. Chennai southwest party district has been carved out of Chennai west party district, an announcement made by DMK general secretary Duraimurugan said.
Incumbent district secretary ‘Madhavaram’ S Sudharsanam would be in-charge of the newly created Chennai northeast DMK district comprising Madhavaram and Tiruvotriyur Assembly constituencies, while T Ilaya Aruna of Royapuram would be in charge of Chennai north district, which would include RK Nagar, Perambur and Royapuram Assembly seats.
DT Next had reported a fortnight ago that division of DMK party districts in the state capital was mooted by the high command.
Likewise, the coveted Chennai west party district in which DMK headquarters and residence of the party president falls has been divided into three-constituency (Chepauk-Triplicane, Thousand Lights and Anna Nagar) district, which would be headed by incumbent N Sitrarasu. Area secretary ‘Mayilai’ T Velu would manage the affairs of Chennai southwest party district consisting of T Nagar and Myalpore Assembly seats.
The reorganisation of Chennai DMK districts on the lines of the other party district divisions (two or three assembly seats each) was speculated since the appointment of Sitrarasu as in charge of Chennai west district, which was vacated by former MLA J Anbazhagan, who died due to COVID-19 in June.
Meanwhile, the DMK leadership has also trifurcated its Thanjavur party units into Thanjavur north, central and south districts with the first two having three Assembly seats each.
Thanjavur south party district comprising Pattukottai and Peraruvarani constituencies would be headed by ‘Yenathi’ P Balasubramaniam. Durai Chandrasekar and S Kalayansundaram would be in-charge of Thanjavur central and north districts respectively.
