A 20-year-old college student who cheated a girl after promising to marry her was arrested under Pocso Act near Tambaram on Thursday.

The arrested, K Sheik Mohamed of Mahalakshmi Nagar in Camp Road, was studying BCom at a private college in Tambaram. Police said Sheik was in a relationship with an 18-year-old girl in the locality whom he knew since the school days. A few months ago, after the girl became pregnant, Sheik promised her that he would marry her after the delivery and asked her not to abort the baby.
Recently, the girl gave birth to a baby boy and her family approached Sheikh’s family requesting conduct of the marriage at the earliest. Police said Sheik’s family promised to arrange the marriage after two months.
Meanwhile, the girl came to know that Sheikh’s family had arranged an engagement for him with another girl and informed her parents. Soon, a complaint was filed at Tambaram all-women police station and police, after an inquiry, arrested Sheik Mohamed under Pocso Act and remanded him in judicial custody and sent to prison.
