The person who posted the tweet from the handle @ItsRithikRajh has been booked under Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 294(b) (obscene language) of IPC and 67B
(publishing or transmitting of material depicting children in sexually explicit act in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act. While many had voluntarily lodged complaints online seeking action against the perpetrator, city police have also received a complaint from Sethupathi’s assistant to formally register a case.
The tweet said that the actor’s daughter had to be raped for Vijay Sethupathi to realise the pain of Tamils and the message also had a photo of the actor and his daughter. Many objected to the tweet and there was an outpour of rage against the perpetrator online. Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal later tweeted that a case has been registered on receipt of a complaint since there has been a lot of concern in social media regarding comments made against a celebrity.
Sethupathi became the centre of controversy after he accepted to reprise cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan’s life on screen in the latter’s biopic movie, since the former cricketer had made comments against the erstwhile war for Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka. While the actor stood his ground on essaying the role despite opposition from within and without the film industry and several hashtags were trending on Twitter against the actor, he later withdrew from the production on the request of Muralitharan.

A 16-year-old boy was detained from Kutch district in Gujarat for allegedly issuing the threats. The teenager “confessed” to have posted the threatening message on the Instagram account after the IPL 2020 match between KKR and CSK, police said.
