While the Nation celebrates the its 74th Independence Day today (Saturday), Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisami hoisted the National Flag at Fort St. George.
The Independence Day celebrations have been organized at St.George's Fort which is the Secretariat of Tamilnadu. Earlier the an appeal was made to the public on behalf of the TN government, not to attend the celebrations owing to the pandemic situation.
Early reports said that CM Edappadi Palanisamy arrived at around 8:00am to the secretariat and he was welcomed by Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam.
Tamil Nadu DGP. JK Tripathi, Chennai Police Commissioner Maheshkumar Agarwal, Additional DGP (Law and Order) K. Jayant Murali were also present in the event.
Later, Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy, after accepting the Guard of Honour by the Police team, he hoisted the Tricolor National Flag in the Secretariat.
After delivering the Independence day address, Chief Minister gave away gallantary awards and certificates of recognition for the awardees.
As many as 15 police officers from TN were presented with Chief Minister’s police medal for Excellence on the occasion of Independence Day. Out of 15 police officers seven are women.
Educationalist Anandham Selvakumar was awarded Abdul Kalam award. While Anandhavalli, Senthamizh and Muthamaal of Perambalur district were awarded with Kalpana Chawla award.
EPS in his independence day address thanked the frontline warriors and he announced that a Veterinary hospital will be opened in Udumalpet, soon.
Earlier in a bid to avoid untoward incidents, city police had made arrangements for Independence day celebrations and traffic was diverted too. As many as 15,000 police personnel were deployed. A control room to monitor the CCTVs was also set up and police have identified ten sensitive places in the city.
The following modifications in the movement of traffic was given effect from 6 am. The stretch of Kamarajar Salai from Labour Statue up to RBI Subway North on Rajaji Salai and Flag Staff Road is closed for all the vehicular traffic other than the vehicles with car passes.
