The infamous bathroom slippages at police stations in Tamil Nadu returned after a break, with a 45-year-old man, who allegedly abused personnel from Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), suffering fracture on his right hand after reportedly slipping in the Ambattur police station bathroom.
Later, Devendran, who claimed to be a social activist, allegedly posted abusive and vulgar messages about Ambattur PEW inspector George Miller in a WhatsApp group of which he is the admin.
Based on a complaint by Nathamuni, the Ambattur police registered a case and secured Devendran on Wednesday night. During the interrogation at the station, Devendran slipped inside the bathroom and fractured his right hand, claimed the police. He was later remanded in judicial custody. Officials said the accused already has two cases pending against him in Tirumullaivoyal.
There were several such cases of accused allegedly suffering a fall in the bathroom and breaking their hands or leg – sometimes both – which prompted many activists to urge the State Human Rights Commission to take note and direct action against the police personnel involved. One activist even filed an RTI request seeking details about cleaning the toilets in police stations in the State.
