The State government was waiting for the environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests for a Rs 27 crore project proposal to build a training wall at the Pulicat estuary, it informed the Madras High Court.
Special government pleader J Pothiraj placed on record the Detailed Project Report for design of training wall - a structure built to direct the flow of water. It was prepared by the Department of Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, in January 2015.
He submitted that the proposal involved filling the opening of the Pulicat estuary at a cost of Rs 27 crore. He also noted that environmental clearance from the Union Environment Ministry was also sought for, which the State Government has been pursuing.
“Let the clearance obtained by the State government along with the progress report of the environmental clearance by the Centre be placed before this court within six weeks,” said the bench led by Justice Vineet Kothari, adjourning the case to April 27.
The proposed project envisages taking up estuary mouth training works to stabilise the mouth opening.
