Vehicle owners will have to soon pay charges to park on major roads in Besant Nagar, T Nagar and Anna Nagar as the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to inaugurate on-street parking management system.
The 17 roads include Marina Service Road, Besant Nagar 6th Avenue (Beach Road), Wallajah Road, Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue, Thyagaraya Road (Pedestrian plaza), Venkatanarayana Road, Kadar Nawaz Khan Road, Ambattur Industrial Estate Road and others.
Of the 17 roads, Marina Service Road will house as many as 1,345 vehicles and Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue will house 700 vehicles.
“These 17 roads have space to park 5,532 cars at once. Of the total space available, 20 per cent will be allocated for two-wheelers and five per cent space for differently-abled persons. As many as 460 CCTV cameras have been installed on the roads to monitor the parking,” an official said.
The civic body had already launched a mobile phone application ‘GCC Smart Parking’ on a pilot basis. The vehicle owners can use the application to pay charges and to identify vacant parking spaces of the road.
During the planning phase, the civic body identified 12,047 parking slots on 378 bus route roads across the city and the project is being implemented by a private consortium. Once the system comes into effect, two-wheeler owners and car owners would have pay Rs 5 and Rs 20 per hour respectively. Parking would be allowed from 8 am to 11 pm.
After implementing the first phase on 17 roads, the civic body has plans to implement the system on 100 more roads during the second phase and 120 more during the third phase.
