The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTN&P) has suspended five Chennai-based advocates involved in extorting money from the owner of Saravana Elite jewellery shop on Usman Road in T Nagar from practicing law in all courts in India. The city police arrested nine persons including the five advocates on November 13 based on a complaint lodged by the jewellery shop owner Siva Aruldurai.
As per the case, one Dhanasekar, who claimed to be the vice-president of Universal Press Media, had visited the store on November 3. He had exchanged some gold coins for a three sovereign gold chain. Following this, he accused the shop of giving him a fake gold chain. Claiming to be a journalist he said he would carry the news in the media and create a negative image about the store.
Following this, the jewellery shop owner had reportedly parted with Rs 15 lakh to Dhanasekar to refrain him from publishing any news about it. But on November 13, he returned with 14 other people and demanded Rs 1 crore saying the store was selling fake gold.
The employees alerted the police who arrived at the spot and nabbed nine persons, while the rest managed to escape. Among the nine persons held, five of them were advocates who have been suspended now.
