The Public Works Department (PWD) has started desilting and dredging the course of Adyar river. The work that began on Friday would be completed in 2020.
According to PWD officials, the desilting works at Tiruneermalai has been completed on one side as the bridge was demolished for widening the river in January this year.
The work on the bridge connecting Tiruneermalai to Thirumudivakkam started in August but was put on hold due to the rain. As a result, the locals complained that they were forced to use the mud road across the riverbed, which is in a tattered condition and on the verge of collapsing. During the rain, public find it difficult to walk on the road, as the river gets flooded and the water flows on the road, they added.
