The car that was speeding to escape the police hit a truck from behind and came to a halt, said the police. One tonne of red sanders logs was seized from the vehicle and the driver was arrested.
Kancheepuram Narcotics Intelligence Bureau DSP Julius Caesar and police personnel were involved in a vehicle check near the integrated toll plaza at Elavur on Sunday morning. As a car did not stop and instead sped away from the spot dodging the police personnel, they started chasing the vehicle.
A few kilometres after the chase, the car hit a truck near Gummidipoondi from behind and came to a halt. The front portion of the car was mangled in the accident. Following this, the officers checked the vehicle and seized the red sanders logs from the backseat.
In all, 12 red sanders logs, weighing about one tonne, were seized from the vehicle and the driver was arrested. He was identified as Samuel, a resident of Red Hills. Samuel was smuggling the logs in the vehicle from Srikalahasti in Andhra Pradesh to Chennai, said the police. He was arrested and handed over to the Gummidipoondi Forest department officer Manikkavasagam along with red sanders logs for further investigation.
