The police have arrested two men for allegedly attacking an employee of a money exchange firm and trying to snatch and flee with Rs 8 lakh worth foreign currency on Anna Salai near Munro Statue on Thursday evening. But members of the public overpowered the suspects and handed them over to the police.
“On Thursday evening, Rafiyudin was assigned to take Rs 8.20 lakh worth foreign currency from Kalandar’s house to the office. Rafiyudin was riding his two-wheeler towards Triplicane with the money. When he reached the statue of Thomas Munro, an autorickshaw hit his two-wheeler him from behind,” the police said.
After Rafiyudin fell from the bike, two men alighted from the autorickshaw and snatched the bag containing cash from him and tried to kidnap him in the same auto. Rafiyudin shouted for help and the passers-by immediately intercepted the auto and rescued him, the police noted.
The public also managed to nab the duo -- Baskar and Ramesh. But the autorickshaw driver, identified as Vignesh, escaped. The public handed the duo over to the police, who arrested them and have launched a hunt for the autorickshaw driver.
The Police said that the duo was from Madurai and knew the victim was carrying money and decided to kidnap him for the cash. The police have seized the money and are checking the documents for the cash. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
