Based on a complaint by a woman from Lithuania, the Thousand Lights all women police station team on Thursday arrested a city-based businessman and his father for allegedly cheating her with a promise of marriage.
The 23-year-old woman had met Rumaiz Ahamed in Dubai, where she was a student and he was on a business trip. According to the police, they met at a party and fell in love. Later, they were in a live-in relationship. Rumaiz then brought the woman to India and made her stay in hotels in Cochin and Chennai.
In her complaint, the woman said that Rumaiz refused to marry her and forced her to terminate her pregnancy in June this year. She conceived again refused to abort the baby after which Rumaiz and his father threatened her. Rumaiz then left her and cut off all communication with the pregnant woman, forcing her to file a complaint with the help of an NGO.
A complaint was lodged with the crime against women and children unit, which forwarded the petition to the Thousand Lights all women police station. They registered a case and on Thursday, police team apprehended the businessman and his father, under IPC sections for cheating, causing miscarriage without the woman’s consent) and criminal intimidation.
