Tiruvallur district police have intensified monitoring of anti-social elements’ activities in localities bordering Chennai following the seizure of four guns from suspects in three cases reported in different locations last week.
“We are collecting intelligence and monitoring the activities of anti-social elements, especially in areas bordering Chennai city,” the district superintendent noted when DT Next contacted him.
Last week, the police arrested suspects related to three cases in Sholavaram, Minjur and Gummidipoondi, and seized four guns from them.
A duo with two guns was arrested by the police in Gummidipoondi after they robbed factory workers on Friday.
Last Tuesday, public caught a gun totting robber near Red Hills when he was trying to rob a shop keeper after threating him with the weapon. He was handed over to the Sholavaram police station.
In the third incident, which was reported last Saturday, two men were caught in Gummidipoondi after they robbed Rs 5,000 from a man at gunpoint.
Police sources noted that all the suspects in the three cases had some links to Gummidipoondi. “Either they were from Gummidipoondi or the crimes happened in that locality. It is possible that all the suspects had procured the firearms from the same network,” sources added.
During the inquiry, the suspects had claimed that they had procured the guns from Delhi. “We are verifying their claims and are also collecting further information,” an officer noted.
The police noted that gun running was not new to the State and availability of fire arms for a price ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh has increased after handful of migrant labourers found it easy bring in guns from Bihar or other north Indian states and sell it to gangsters in the State.
