Tangled cable TV wires lying on roads and dangerously hanging from poles, some of them just about a few feet from the ground, at Thiruvallur Nagar in Old Washermenpet pose a grave danger to pedestrians and motorists. They find it difficult to make use of the road and pavements as a result of these wires.
Locals said that there were instances when these wires have caused fire during rain after coming in contact with live electric cables. Though complaints were lodged, no steps were taken.
“During rainfall, the weight of these cables causes branches to break and fall on roads. We informed the cable operators to set right the hanging cables on the stretch. They have promised to do so immediately. In some areas, they tied the cable on to poles but it usually falls after a few days. It has become a regular issue in the locality,” said Sri Devi, a resident of Thiruvallur Nagar.
Ramesh, the local cable operator in Tondiarpet said, “We have tied the poles after receiving complaints from residents and traffic police. We will fix the issues as soon as possible.”
Speaking to DT Next, P Duraisamy, Chief Engineer (electrical, planning, EDP and GIS) said, “We have conducted a meeting on this issue. From next week, we will be clearing the cables from the areas. For further complaints, pubic can call toll-free number 1913.”
