Following the Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s announcement, the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department has issued a Government Order according administrative sanction for Rs 1,001 crore for phase-1 of the project to arrest sewage outfalls into Cooum, Adyar rivers and Buckingham Canal.
Of the Rs 2,371 crore, Rs 608 crore has been earmarked for plugging of outfalls in Buckingham Canal and its associated drains. Plugging of outfalls in Adyar and Cooum rivers would cost Rs 89.27 crore and Rs 31.46 crore respectively. Rest of the fund would be spent on the enlargement of sewage pumping main, existing gravity sewer main, construction of new sewage treatment plants and others.
According to the GO, Rs 300 crore would be utilised from Chennai Mega City Development Mission (CMCDM) and Rs 400 crore would be provided by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB). The remaining funds would be allotted from budgetary support.
