The city police arrested four people on Tuesday for staging an accident and kidnapping a 50-year-old businessman in Madhavaram on Saturday evening.
S Krishnan lives in Nerkundram and deals in electronic items. He was returning home from work on Saturday when around 5pm near the Puzhal tollgate, five men in two motorbikes intercepted his car. The men told him that he had hit a two-year-old child on the way, abused him and demanded compensation.
When Krishnan told them that he was not involved in any accident, they assaulted him and three of the men got into his car.
Krishnan then realised that he was being kidnapped and cried for help, but in vain. The men took him to an isolated place in Pazhaverkadu and demanded a ransom of Rs 20 lakh. Krishnan had Rs 1 lakh cash in the car which the men took away. Sources in the police said that the kidnappers ordered the businessman to call his wife and ask for the rest of the money. “But then, the men began to argue among themselves and did not give Krishnan a phone,” said an officer.
The men then assaulting him and threw him out of the car near Gummidipoondi and fled. Krishnan then approached the Madhavaram police station to file a complaint.
The police went through CCTV footage from the area and zeroed in on the suspects. “The accused were first time offenders.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Raj Kumar was the mastermind and his nephew had met with an accident once near Madhavaram, when Krishnan — who was at the spot — helped him financially. Krishnan had also helped an elderly woman who had met with an accident a month ago,” said the officer.
“Raj had witnessed him helping the victims and wanted to use Krishnan’s good will to make quick money,” he added.
