Higher Secondary schools run by the Greater Chennai Corporation have crossed 90 per cent pass for the first time by securing 90.41 pass percentage in the recently conducted Class 12 public examinations. The civic body maintains 32 higher secondary schools.
During the 2017-2018 academic year, the Chennai Corporation schools registered a pass percentage of 88.74. In 2016-2017, the civic body had registered 88.74 per cent.
In another achievement, four Chennai Corporation schools -- namely Koyambedu Chennai Higher Secondary School, Subburayan Street Chennai Higher Secondary School, Nesappakkam Chennai Higher Secondary School and Nungambakkam Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School -- recorded 100 per cent result. The four schools have 300 students in total.
In the previous academic year, only three schools managed to register 100 per cent pass. Koyambedu Chennai Higher Secondary School and Subburayan Street Chennai Higher Secondary School were in the list last year, too.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash met the headmasters of the four schools and handed over Rs 1 lakh each. “The fund will be utilised to create additional facilities in the schools,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
According to a Corporation statement, only four students secured full marks in various subjects as against 69 students in the previous year. Seven students have scored more than 550 marks out of 600 while 58 students scored more than 500 marks. As many as 168 students scored more than 450 marks.
