Two bike riders were charred to death and two pillion riders suffered burns after their vehicles collided and caught fire on Chengalpattu – Thirukazhukundram Road on Saturday night. The incident happened around 8.30 pm near Pullamedu village.
The other deceased rider was identified as Hariharanm (28) of Sernthamangalam near Chengalpattu.
Hariharan, who was triple riding with Divakar (15) and his brother Nithish (17), were travelling to Thirukazhukundram from Chengalpattu to attend a marriage function.
The police suspected that one of the pillion riders may have been smoking a cigarette when the accident happened. They added that the burning cigarette might have caused the fire after the collission.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Prem Kumar, who was heading to Chengalpattu from Thirukazhukundram overtook another vehicle. In the process, he went to the wrong side of the road and hit Hariharan’s bike. In the impact, the fuel tank of one of the bikes was damaged and the petrol leaked on the riders, said the police.
