Mohammed Rafiq of Puducherry, who joined the jewellery as one of the sales managers 10 days ago, reached the showroom around at 8.45 am when the staff were preparing to open the shop. Claiming that he suffered injuries in a minor accident and wanted to take first-aid kit he had kept in the showroom, he entered the shop.
Around 9.45 am, when the other staff members reached the showroom as usual, they found that jewels worth Rs 17 lakh were missing. After receiving the alert from them, showroom manager Srinivasan lodged a complaint at Anna Nagar police station, but police are yet to secure him.
Police suspect that he had concealed the gold in the first-aid kit box and escaped. After preliminary investigation, police said he started stealing gold from day he joined and finally managed to escape with a substantial quantity of gold.
