The deceased was identified as Sharada, a pre-KG student, who was living with her parents and a younger sister on the seventh floor of Manju apartment complex on Chitra Avenue, Choolaimedu. Police said Sharada had come back from school on Wednesday and was sleeping after dinner when her mother, Geetha, went to the sixth floor to meet a family living there.
When Sharada woke up around 8 pm, she went looking for her mother. That was when she saw Geetha on the sixth floor from the balcony. Not realising the dangers, the little girl tried to reach for her mother, but slipped and fell through the handrails of the balcony.
Geetha and neighbours who saw her falling down rushed outside and took the severely injured girl to a nearby private hospital. From there, she was shifted to the Institute of Child Health Hospital, Egmore. But, Sharada died without responding to treatment on Thursday. The body was shifted to Kilpauk Medical college for post-mortem examination. The Choolaimedu police have registered a case.
Geetha’s husband Gopal has been working with the construction company which built the apartment they were living in. The family, originally hailing from Nepal, was allotted a single room house on the seventh floor.
