Rajasekar (35), attached to St Thomas Mount police station, was returning home at Maduvankarai on his two-wheeler after work. When he was crossing the Gandhi market at 10.30 pm, he heard a cry for help. When he went to the spot, he saw three men beating up two persons in a bid to rob them.
When Rajasekar confronted the trio, the other two victims managed to escape and the gang turned their attention on him. They took the policeman to a corner and beat him up. The gang also robbed him of his mobile phone and three-sovereign gold chain and fled the spot.
The constable, who had another phone, called up the St Thomas police station following which his colleagues rushed to the spot and took him to
the Chromepet GH for treatment.
Following the complaint he lodged, police arrested two of the gang members – Venkatesan (30) and Chandran (20) – from their house on Sabari Street. Based on their confession, a hunt is on for the third accused Naveen (27).
Police said that the accused are known for extorting money from local shops, besides indulging in robberies.
