When did you start the food truck to feed the homeless?
We started it five years ago, where we run this food truck twice a year – on World Hunger Day (May 28) and on World Food Day (October 16). Recently, the food truck travelled across Virugambakkam, Saligrammam, Koyambedu and Vadapalani. It is not about handing out food packets to the hungry and homeless in the street. We serve and feed them just like we would do to a guest, without hurting their dignity. This year, we also invited children from two homes in the city, and ensure they were well fed.
What are the other measures taken to alleviate hunger?
We have a weekly program, where we ensure that the homeless in the city are fed. We often tie up with hotels and other people who want to contribute and conduct these drives. Only on the two days mentioned above, that a larger drive is being conducted.
How can people stop food waste?
Knowingly or unknowingly, people waste food – either when they dine out or even at homes. If it is hotels, people can pack up the leftover food and hand it out to a homeless person they come across. If it is home-cooked food, it can be packed and given to the people. In every locality, there are hungry people and this practice will also ensure that food waste is avoided.
