Several years ago, at a magazine editorial shoot, I met the incredibly talented makeup artist Akriti Sachdev (Aki) who was just starting her now popular YouTube Channel, and her boyfriend Farhan Sajjad. He had come to drop her off and I noticed that he was incredibly supportive of Aki’s career that he even had ideas and suggestions regarding the shoot that the photographer thought he was her assistant much to our amusement.
Cut back to yesterday, when I woke up to the news that Farhan had proposed to her on a hot air balloon 2500 feet in the air, near Sigriya in Sri Lanka. Farhan tells me that he has been planning this proposal for over a month.
His ideal proposal would have been to pop the question while he was piloting a plane. Since that wasn’t feasible, this was the closest he could get to the clouds. “This was one early morning flight I was excited to wake up for,” he says.
These two lovebirds have been dating for six years now and two years since things got serious - they had a talk about future plans and they both knew they wanted to focus on their careers, wait for it to take off before taking the next big step. Farhan planned this holiday and Aki had an inkling that he might propose. So, she had a lovely gown packed and had gotten her manicure done. Gentlemen take notes because this is an absolutely romantic proposal and one done right. Aki tells me, “I didn’t expect him to do it on the first day. Also, who expects a proposal early in the morning? You are thinking sunsets and lights, not at the crack of dawn. On Thursday, he told me we should get an early night because we must be up at 4.15 am and I was like what? Why? I would like to sleep in. He asked me to guess where he was taking me and I assumed it was a safari and he acted all disappointed as though I had guessed it right. He even told me to keep me the gown ready for the night. (Misdirection is effective when planning a surprise). He blindfolded me and took me to the spot and I opened my eyes to see a hot air balloon being prepped. I was really happy and thought that was the surprise. Then, he proposed to me. I was over the moon, and in the back of my head there was this voice that was saying I wish I had worn a gown and not ripped jeans. But I wouldn’t change a thing.”
I wish them a happy life and hope they continue to fly high and be happy.
When Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriend attended a kutcheri
Mikhail Baryshnikov (centre) with wife Lisa Rinehart (left), and Didem Atahan Fabig, at a Margazhi concert in the city
A post by a friend, the beautiful Didem Atahan Fabig, with legendary ballet dancer and Hollywood actor Mikhail Baryshnikov sparked my interest for a way to reach the man. For those of you who aren’t familiar with his ballet career will definitely remember him from his stint on Sex and the City as Carrie Bradshaw’s much older artist boyfriend. For many of us, this was our first reference to dating an older man.
Today, as someone who is dating a man 11 years older than me, I can’t help but compare and draw parallels to that show. My very own Cary introduced me to some of Mikhail’s best ballet performances that were available for viewing online. His mastery and control over his own body, something that most of us take for granted is astounding. This would probably explain why I felt this strange need to try and track this man down and interview him. All I knew was that he had come down to Chennai to enjoy the famed Margazhi concerts and I was calling every rasika I knew to keep an eye out, and every hotel manager to see if he was staying at their property.
By the time I managed to find a contact, he had already left the city. I wish I had gotten to meet him and say this in person, ‘Thank you for the incredible contribution to art, you have inspired many a generation to learn to appreciate and love ballet. Your iconic role in Sex and the City opened my eyes to the possibility of dating someone older’.
