Chellathai M received her Masters of Arts (MA) degree in History and was the cynosure of all eyes at the convocation which was attended by Higher Education Minister KP Anbalagan and Higher Education Secretary Sunil Paliwal. In fact, those present on the dais shared a lighter moment when she collected her degree.
The journey of the mother of three is inspiring. Hailing from Sattur in Virudhunagar district she wanted to go to college after finishing her schooling. She finished her Secondary School Education. She says that she wanted to join Queen Mary’s College in Chennai, but her father tore the application form. Those days women were not allowed to go to college and she had to let go of her dreams then. She got married after that.
Life brought her to Chennai and she found a job in Civil Supplies Corporation in Chennai at a superintendent level. She worked while she was managing home in Madipakkam and retired from her job in 2009.
It was after husband passed away in 2013 that she pursued her higher dreams to finish her college education. She first finished her Bachelors in English Literature. It was one of her daughters who inspired her to do so. Her next target was a Master’s degree, and she cleared in the first attempt for which she received a degree on Monday. Her next target is to finish law and she is confident about achieving her goal.
