The incident took place on Vaiyavur Salai near Kancheepuram old railway station at 2.30 pm. Police said that Dinesh (32), who was Sridhar’s car driver, was chased by three other men in another car.
Dinesh, who tried to escape in an SUV got stuck near Kancheepuram old railway station as the gates were closed. When he tried to proceed on the Vaiyavur Salai, his rivals in the car hurled two country bombs at him. While one fell on the car and broke the wind shield, the other fell near a biriyani shop owned by one Raja. The shrapnel from the bomb injured Raja’s son Dakshinamoorthy, who is said to be mentally unstable.
While the residents of the locality and passengers were shocked by the incident, Dinesh managed to drive away the car to Vishu Kanchi Police station and surrender.
Police rushed to the spot, but the men had already escaped. After residents complained that Dinesh too threw a bomb at his rivals, police have detained Dinesh and are interrogating him. Dinesh told the police that the rival gang that attacked him was led by Dhanika, who is also Sridhar’s man. Police are searching for Dhanika and his gang and are also inquiring what led to the clash between them.
Due to the incident, all the shops in the locality were shut and the area wore a deserted look.
It may be recalled that Sridhar Dhanapalan, dubbed the Dawood Ibrahim of the south, allegedly committed suicide in Cambodia on October 4. His body was brought to India by his family after a prolonged legal battle and the funeral was held amid tight security.
After Sridhar’s death, police have been arresting all his associates. On November 1, Sridhar’s cook Devendran was arrested when he reached Bengaluru from Malaysia.
