Police said the culprits riding a motorbike after following the victim, Tamilarasi (40), for some distance and hit her from behind. The victim, who lost balance and fell off her vehicle, suffered injuries. Even as she cried for help, the duo snatched her 7-sovereign gold chain. Before fleeing the spot, the two snatchers assaulted her children as they tried to resist their attempt.
The woman later lodged a complaint with the ICF police in which she alleged that none of the street lights on the stretch were on at the time of the crime. Police said Tamilarasi was on her way back home to Thanthonni Amman Koil Street, Villivakkam after visiting her sister at ICF when the incident took place.
A similar incident happened on the Peters Road overbridge on March 3, where a 30-year-old woman, Catherine, was knocked down from her vehicle and her chain snatched. Catherine had hit her head against the parapet of the bridge and suffered bleeding injuries.
Police are yet to arrest the culprits in that case too. In another incident, a woman waiting at a bus stop was robbed of her six-sovereign chain on Taylors Road in Kilpauk on Monday night. Police said Sarala (45), a resident of NSK Road, Arumbakkam was waiting at a bus stop after returning from a relative’s house when two persons wearing helmets came on a two-wheeler and snatched her gold chain.
Sarala cried out for help but the snatchers managed to escape from the spot. She later lodged a complaint with the police, who launched a hunt for the culprits. Though Taylors Road used to be busy even at night, police said there was no crowd at the bus stop at the time of the incident.
