The Kelambakkam police, who arrested Michaelraj (28) on Thursday, said the accused got into a quarrel with his wife Mariaranjitham alias Jayarani (24) over work at the scrap shop owned by them near the house on Wednesday.
Still angry at his wife, Michaelraj came home drunk on Wednesday night. After Jayarani went to sleep along with her four children, the accused went back to the scrap shop, returned with a stone weighing 25 kg and smashed it on his wife’s head.
Neighbours rushed to the spot hearing the loud cry of Jayarani and found her dead in a pool of blood. Police, on being informed, rushed to the spot and arrested Michaelraj. Police are investigating other motives for the murder.
Murders owing to family problems and extramarital affairs have been on the rise in Chennai city.
On January 10, a 26-year-old woman along with her 10-month-old baby were beaten to death by her husband after he was suspicious of her character. The second child was also seriously injured and admitted to hospital.
