Plastics have become inevitable in our lives. We live right in between piles of plastic. We start off the day with a plastic tooth-brush and sign-off probably by switching on the AC using a plastic remote.
Although it is hard to avoid plastics, Chennai Trekking Club, as a part of their Coastal Cleanup to be held on June 19 has started an online awareness campaign on ‘No Plastic Challenge’ over the next five days. All that a participant needs to do is take a selfie with them ditching a plastic-based activity and post the picture in social media for five days and add hashtags #NoPlasticChallenge and #ChennaiCostalCleanup.
“On an average each one of us uses upto 10 plastic bags in a day. We can work on looking for substitutes for plastic, even if at a small level and adopt a more eco-freindly lifestyle”, says Sinthu Bhairavi, one of the organisers of the clean-up and part of Chennai Trekking Club. If you run out of ideas to ditch a particular plastic-based activity, CTC will provide a link on their site that is constantly being updated with new ideas shared by the participants which can be referred to.
